Day trips from Tbilisi · 2026

Leave the city.
Keep the day realistic.

Compare history, wine country, mountains and nearby nature by driving time, conditions and what can honestly fit between breakfast and bedtime.

Compare the day

Eight routes,
eight different commitments.

0130–60 min each way
History · easy logistics

Mtskheta & Jvari

Svetitskhoveli, old Mtskheta and Jvari viewpoint. A half day works; add a reserved family cellar or lunch for a slower full day.

Year-round; dress respectfully for churches.
021.5–2 hr each way
History · exposed terrain

Gori & Uplistsikhe

Pair Gori with the rock-cut Uplistsikhe complex. The cave site has uneven, exposed surfaces; heat, wind, rain or ice change the experience.

Best in mild, dry weather.
031.5–2.5 hr each way
Wine · food · landscapes

Sighnaghi & Kakheti

Choose either Sighnaghi/Bodbe or Telavi/Gombori plus one or two pre-booked wineries. Trying to cover all Kakheti in a day produces more driving than tasting.

Spring and autumn are excellent; wineries require a sober driver.
043+ hr each way
Mountains · long day

Kazbegi / Stepantsminda

Georgian Military Highway viewpoints and Stepantsminda. Weather, traffic and road restrictions can transform the timetable; an overnight is usually better.

Late spring–autumn easiest; winter needs active road checks.
052–3 hr each way
Semi-desert · monastery landscape

David Gareja area

Remote terrain and sensitive border-area conditions require a current route check. Do not assume every trail or section is accessible.

Avoid extreme heat; use an experienced local driver/guide.
0645–75 min each way
Wine · easy day

Château Mukhrani / Kartli wine

A closer wine-country alternative to deep Kakheti. Book tastings and meals, and consider combining with Mtskheta rather than overloading the day.

Year-round with reservations.
072–2.5 hr each way
Canyon · engineered attraction

Dashbashi / Tsalka

A longer nature-and-attraction day south-west of Tbilisi. Check weather, ticketing and what parts of the canyon experience are operating.

Spring–autumn; conditions matter.
08Urban edge plus walk
Picnic · light hiking

Chili Lake / nearby nature

A low-commitment escape near the city, but the final approach and six-kilometre walk described by Georgia Travel require planning.

Year-round, with footwear and weather judgment.

Choose the right transport

Marshrutka, driver,
tour or rental car?

INDEPENDENT PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Best for simple town routes

Affordable and authentic, but departure points, timetables and return certainty may be difficult for multi-stop days. Confirm the current station and last return locally.

PRIVATE DRIVER

Flexible, but define the scope

Agree vehicle, route, waiting time, language, overtime, meals, entrance/parking and return time in writing. A driver is not automatically a licensed guide.

SMALL GROUP TOUR

Easy logistics, fixed pace

Check group size, shopping stops, guide qualification, inclusions and actual time at each attraction.

SELF-DRIVE

Freedom with responsibility

Verify licence validity, insurance, excess, tyres, weather, road restrictions and parking. Do not combine wine tasting and driving.

Before departure

A five-minute check
can save the day.

Weather and roads

Mountain weather is not Tbilisi weather. Check official/current road restrictions and ask the operator before Kazbegi or remote routes.

Opening and worship

Monasteries are active religious sites; museums and attractions have their own days/hours. Build alternatives.

Cash and connectivity

Carry some GEL, offline maps, charged power bank, water and the driver/host number. Coverage can weaken outside towns.

Travel time

Search-engine estimates exclude photo stops, traffic, meals, queues and Georgian road conditions. Add margin.

Border sensitivity

For David Gareja and remote border areas, get current advice and obey signs/authorities. Access can change.

Emergency

Share the plan, vehicle and return time. Call 112 for urgent police, fire or medical assistance in Georgia.
